WHAT I AM READING LATELY. A JANUARY BOOK REPORT.

HAPPY 2017! Each month around here, I tell you all the books I have been reading. Why? Because choosing books to read can be hard and everyone needs a little book inspiration from time to time. 

I love to read. Books are my thing. We read a lot around our house. We talk about books. We listen to books. We read books and then watch movies. I am a big believer that loving good books are contagious. All you need some really good inspiration. 

I challenge myself to read a certain number of books each year. I try to mix it up between fiction and nonfiction. Up until a few years ago, I never read fiction. In 2010, I challenged myself to read 10 fiction books in one year. After that year, I was hooked. Fiction is now a regular part of my reading rotation.

THE WIFE THE MAID AND THE MISTRESS BY ARIEL LAWHON

I grabbed this book right off the library shelf not knowing what to expect, but I seriously LOVED it! In 1930, Judge Joseph Crater steps into a cab in New York City and is never seen again. Joseph Crater was a prominent judge in New York City. He was married to his faithful and fashionable wife, Stella. He employed a hard-working maid, Maria, and spent time with his showgirl mistress named Ritzi. The day he goes missing unfolds through the eyes of each woman and reveals the stories of their lives. The ending was not what I expected and kept me guessing until the end. I could not put this book down.

ALL THE PRETTY THINGS BY EDIE WADSWORTH

Edie Wadsworth is the popular blogger from Life (in) Grace. Her style is flawless and her home is breathtaking. I had no idea what to expect from this book, but it has quickly become on of my favorites. 

All The Pretty Things is Edie's story. It is written more like a novel than a nonfiction book, but oh my word - it is unforgettable. I had to remind myself many times this was a true story. It is raw and real. It is broken and redemptive. Go grab this book. 

EVERY MAN A MENACE BY PATRICK HOFFMAN

I read Every Man a Menace ins 24 hours (thanks, ice storm!).  Raymond Gaspar gets out of jail and finds himself in the middle of an ecstasy-smuggling ring. He is supposed to smooth out some rough spots and keep his eye on an over eccentric dealer in charge of distribution. Raymond quickly finds out this job was more than he bargained for and extends far beyond his San Francisco neighborhood. 

What I loved most about this book is the way it was written. It has NO chapters, just 5 parts. It does not read like a typical novel but still keeps you guessing until the end. I love it. The characters were so good and the plot was fantastic. 

WHAT I'M READING WITH THE BOYS

HENRY HUGGIN BY BEVERLY CLEARY

My 7-year-old and I are reading Henry Huggins aloud together. A cute story about a boy named Henry and his dog. Henry and Ribsy get into some fun mischief. You can grab a copy here.

A LONG WALK TO WATER

My 11-year-old and I are reading A Long Walk to Water aloud. Every time we sit down to read, he doesn't want me to stop. This book is good and based on a true story. A great read aloud for older elementary and up!!
