CAN YOU CUT LEATHER WITH YOUR CRICUT MAKER?
Yes, your Cricut Maker can cut leather but be sure to do your research before you begin.
Leather comes in different weights and thicknesses. You can buy faux leather, Cricut brand Genuine Leather, garment leather, tooling leather, and so much more! It’s a good thing to know what type of leather you are cutting and the thickness of your leather before you begin.
Tip: If you are purchasing garment leather from Etsy, message the seller to find out the weight and thickness of your leather before you purchase!
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEATHER YOU CAN CUT WITH YOUR CRICUT MAKER?
A Cricut Maker can cut many different types of leather. Cricut brand sells Genuine Leather, Metallic Leather Faux Suede, and Faux Leather. If you are new to cutting leather with your machine, I highly recommend you start with a Cricut brand leather! You can learn more about how I cut Cricut Genuine Leather here.
A Cricut Maker will also cut garment and tooling leather with a Knife blade. Cricut Explore Air is not compatible with a knife blade. If you need more tips on how I use transfer tape to cut garment leather, go HERE.

WHAT CRICUT BLADE CUTS FAUX LEATHER?
I use a fine point blade when cutting Cricut brand faux leather. If you are using any other brand of faux leather, you may need to use a deep point blade. It depends on the thickness of your faux leather. If you are unsure, always do a test run on your machine first. This way, you don’t ruin all your faux leather.
I also recommend starting with Cricut Faux leather first. Cricut has done all the work for you to ensure your cuts are clean when you use the right blade and the right mat. Cricut’s faux leather comes in 12 x 12 sampler packs in neutral and patina. Personally, I love the neutral pack! It makes beautiful faux leather earrings!
WHAT DO I DO WHEN MY FAUX LEATHER WON’T STICK TO MY MAT?
When cutting Cricut faux leather, be sure the use a Standard Grip Mat (the green one). I always buy this 3 pack. It is the best deal I’ve found on mats!
Lay your faux leather face down. This keeps your mat clean and will extend the life of your mat. You can also use a brayer to ensure your faux leather has fully adhered to your mat. This is optional, but helpful when your mat is old.
Anytime you are cutting any type of leather on your Cricut Maker, I always ask myself 3 questions:
What kind of leather am I using? You can not cut all leather the same with your Cricut Maker. Know what kind of leather you are using before you cut! Are you cutting faux leather, garment leather, tooling leather, or Cricut Brand Genuine Leather?
Is my mat sticky? A dirty or old mat may cause your leather to bunch and shift when cutting. You don’t want this! A new sticky mat helps your leather stay put. Some crafters use masking tape around the edges to hold leather down on their mat while cutting.
Is your blade sharp? A dull blade will make rough and shallow cuts. Your blade will dull over time. I try to keep extra blades on hand!
WHAT SETTING DO I USE TO CUT FAUX LEATHER WITH MY CRICUT MAKER?
When you are cutting Cricut Faux leather with your Cricut Maker select Browse All Materials. Select Faux Leather, Paper Thin. Your machine knows exactly how many cuts are needed to cut this material.
If you have a Cricut Explore Air, the settings are a bit different. Move the dial on your machine to Custom, select Faux Leather (paper-thin).
With both machines, you can use a fine point blade and a standard grip mat!
