Most of the craft projects in our house begin on a total whim. We think up something crazy ( usually while driving in the car) and the next thing you know I'm at Michael's buying a wood burning tool.
This story begins the same way. I can't even remember how it all started really. Brad made this amazing sofa table. I should blog about it sometime. It is my favorite thing in our home right now. After we built it we knew we needed coasters so our people wouldn't ruin it with their cups and such. We've never been coaster people. During our entire 15 years marriage, our home has been FULL of people. We like a lived in home, not a museum. We want to live in the kind of house you don't feel weird about taking your shoes off in. The kind of place you walk in and can just be you. No frills. No fuss.
Suddenly if we were going to be "coaster people" they can't be too high maintenance. These fit the bill. Simple. Natural. Inspirational. Unexpected.
We bought a whole box of these birch tree rounds from this amazing etsy shop. I spent an afternoon designing some quotes. We bought some graphite transfer paper at our local craft store to transfer our graphic to the wood. The trickiest part of the whole project is the wood burning. We practiced on some scrap wood around the house. Each wood burning kit has different tips. So experiment with each one until you feel confident.
A couple coats of poly and your good to go!
I really do love how these turned out. There are SO MANY things you could burn on these coasters - your initials, inspiration quotes, song lyrics, or bible verses - you can't go wrong! These would make a fantastic gift or a fun afternoon project. And perfectionists REJOICE - If you mess up you can sand it and start over. My kind of craft!
