In the past few years, I have really tried to pare down my wardrobe. I had a closet FULL of clothes I did not wear and spent a lot of money on clothes that NEVER fit right. Not to mention, it took way too much time to figure out what to wear each day.
I have been slowly accumulating quality pieces that fit well, are stylish, and can mix with anything. I have found that the LESS clothes I have, the easier it is to get ready each day. I feel more confident and put together.
I shared about my fall capsule wardrobe here. I wanted to put together a winter version for you. I put together 30 key pieces for a complete winter capsule wardrobe. You will notice some of the pieces of my fall capsule rotated into my winter wardrobe. All of these pieces can mix and match to create endless outfit possibilities.
My winter wardrobe is about layering. I live in the midwest. We love our snow and below freezing temps. On any given winter day, I wear no less than 3 layers up top. It's necessary. I promise. So you will notice lots of pieces that layer well. Warmth is the goal here people.
These are my favorite 6 tops for winter layering. Flannel shirts are the best!I We love to grab ours at Old Navy, but J.Crew has some great ones if you have the room in your budget.
I wear a chambray shirt almost all year round. I love it and it layers well. I have a similar one like this from the Gap. It is soft and not bulky. Target has a similar one in stores now.
I put away most of my short sleeve t-shirts in the winter and break out a few long-sleeve versions for warmth. I love Gap long-sleeve t-shirts. I kept one short-sleeve for layering under bulky sweaters.
I pulled out all my sweaters for this wardrobe and put away most of my jackets and blazers. I am wearing 6 basic sweaters this winter. Personally, I like to have one WARM cardigan, a fitted sweater, a poncho or wrap sweater, a tunic sweater, a basic black sweater, and a faux fur vest for fun!!!
When it comes to pants this winter, not much has changed from my fall wardrobe. I have 3 different skinny jeans: a dark rinse, black, and coated. I purchase mine from the Gap or Target.
I just bought these flairs to dress up and Target now carries them for $30. I love a good pair of fleece lined joggers. I bought mine from TJ Maxx last year. They are perfect for running errands in below 0 temps!
I am really into a basic t-shirt dress. The trick is to find one that made of good quality, heavier weight jersey. You want this dress to show off all your good parts, not your the other way around. A good fitting t-shirt dress will change your life. Promise.
I like to layer mine with leggings and a sweater and rain boots. This dress will transition perfectly into the Spring!
I own one from Target that I bought on sale last season, but I have my eye on this one for the Spring. I'll keep you posted!
I use 3 basic coats to get through a Midwest winter: a down jacket, a vest, and a wool coat. I LOVE this down jacket from J.Crew. It is pricey but will last your forever. I also love this vest from J.Crew, but his Old Navy one will do if your budget is tight. I have a basic camel wool coat from the Gap. I love it for work and other times I need to look more polished but want to stay warm.
Shoes. It is so hard to pick just 7, but these are my go-to shoes for winter. For the winter, everything has to keep my ankles warm and my feet dry. I purchase my shoes from Target or Zappos.
Creating a winter wardrobe doesn't have to be complicated or break the bank. These 30 pieces will give you endless and stylish opportunities to get dressed everyday. The best part about our capsule wardrobes is that you can find these pieces in any budget! Remember, the goal is find pieces that fill well and YOU feel good in. Good luck!
