We started making granola about seven years ago. We were quickly getting out of debt. Our budget was tight. Cereal every morning was not in the food budget, but I needed something quick and easy to feed the kids. Granola became my go-to breakfast. Even though we are now out of debt and my food budget has increased, we still only buy commercial cereal 2 or 3 times a year. My boys have literally been raised on this granola. They eat it 3 or 4 times a week. It is easy for them to serve themsevels (WIN!). It is filling, nuritious, and frugal.
makes 6 cups of granola
6 cups of old fashion oats
1/2 cup of butter
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/2 cup of honey
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of vanilla
Preheat oven to 350.
Pour 6 cups of oats in a large bowl and set aside.
Melt butter, brown sugar, and honey in a small saucepan over low heat. When butter and sugar are melted, take it off the heat, and add the cinnamon and vanilla. Stir.
Pour the butter sugar mixutre over the oats. Make sure all the oats are well coated.
Place the oats on a baking sheet. Cook in the oven for 10 minutes. Stir.
Turn oven OFF. Leave in the oven overnight or for about 6 to 8 hours. This will make your granola crisp!
Break apart and store in an air-tight container.
