We have this fun local coffee shop in downtown Kansas City. They serve coffee out of felt wrapped jars instead of cups. It is the best. My husband and I work there from time to time and one day we thought "Hey let's make these at home but instead of felt, let's use leather." We already had a few random thrifted mason jars at home already. I found some scrap pieces of leather and began crafting our own version.
Want to make your own leather coffee sleeve? Here is what you need:
1. 12 oz Mason Jar - We prefer the wide mouth ball jar to the regular mouth all jar lid. We think the 12 oz is a great size. Of course, you could always go smaller or larger.
2. Scrap leather - We found ours at a Hobby Lobby. They have a good selection of scrap leather.
3. X-acto knife
5.Waxed Thread - We found ours at Hobby Lobby.
6. Snaps (optional for a strap)
Measure your Jar and make a paper template of your leather sleeve. A template is really helpful if you want to make more of these (AND believe me - YOU WILL!!!). We used an X-acto knife to cut the leather, but you could also use a heavy duty rotary cutter like this. It creates a smoother cut.
Once your sleeve is cut, punch holes in the leather with your leather hole punch and stitch up your sleeve with waxed thread. You don't need to use a needle. You can stitch it up by hand!
We put an optional handle on this version. The jury is still out on whether we want to keep it or not. If you want a handle on your jar, measure out a your handle and cut slits into your leather sleeve. After a few youtube videos, we figured out how to install two snaps on the straps to keep in in place. I think we both prefer it without a strap, but I love the way it looks WITH a strap. Decisions. Decisions.
After we finished making the first one, we thought of so many other styles and variations for this project. You can use other colors of leather or vinyl. You can secure the cover with snaps instead of leather cording.
This makes the perfect gift or make a set of 2 or 4 for your home. We use ours constantly! It is perfect for that first cup of coffee or tea each morning.
