Thoughts on Family

I read through Seth Godin's Tribes last fall. It is a great read. I highly recommed it!

He says,

" A crowd is a tribe without a leader. A crowd is a tribe without communication."

This particular section sat with me like a rock.  Although I know this book is geared towards business and leadership, I can't help but think about it in terms of family. I began to think of our family within these terms.

A tribe.

A tribe has leadership and communication. A tribe has vision. Vision must be communicated over, and over, and over again.

You see, most of our families tend to be just crowds. A crowd of people existing together. A crowd of people putting up with one another. A crowd obsessed with their own individual gain.

I want more.

I want a tribe. I want to be apart of a tribe......a crazy family tribe.

What does that look like exactly? Well, I don't know and I have a hunch it looks differently for all of us.

We dream about a tribe that loves one another and yet fights through our differences with dignity and passion. We dream about a tribe that takes risks. We dream about a tribe that honors each other differnces and gifts. We dream about a tribe that doens't just "go along with the crowd",  but makes decisions about our time and our money with thought and purpose.  We dream about a tribe that one day will travel the world and recognize that not everyone gets to live in the lavish way we do. We dream about a tribe who opens our home with gracious hospitality. We dream about a tribe in which the leaders are made from great readers.

What about your family? Will you make an effort to be MORE THAN a crowd? What kind of tribe will you be?
